ANANSI’S HISTORY

Three early childhood educators committed to establishing a quality Early Childhood Development Center in Taos County founded Anansi Day School in 1993.  The school opened with an enrollment of 45 children with grades Preschool – First Grade.  Due to community demand, the school expanded to second grade in 1998.  In an effort to become more available to the larger community of Taos and break down the economic barriers, the school obtained its 501(c) not for profit status in the fall of 1999.  The school’s recent improvement

History of Anansi

plan submitted to the North Central Association reflects the exemplary performance of Anansi Day School during its tenure as a private institution. The Board of Directors of Anansi Day School voted to pursue the option of closing its doors as a private institution and becoming a public charter school at its annual meeting in August 2000.  Anansi Charter School submitted its application to the Taos Municipal School District on October 1, 2000.

On January 22, 2001 the Taos Municipal School Board approved the request of Anansi Day School to become Anansi Charter School.  Keeping all of the unique aspects of Anansi Day School intact, Anansi Charter School will continue to offer teaching excellence as a publicly funded, nondiscriminatory, lottery fed school.  The Charter includes Kindergarten through Second Grade.  Most recently, the Anansi Charter School was approved to amend its charter and expand.  The school added third grade for the 2008-2009 school year, will add fourth grade for 2009-2010, then completing the expansion by adding fifth grade in 2010-2011.  The school is currently its campus to include intermediate grades facilities and library/computer lab.  The preschool will remain Anansi Day School with a non-profit status.
